Plans for Port Royal: Sidmouth Sailing Club

A very well-established and much-appreciated institution on the seafront is the 'Port Royal Club' which hosts the Sidmouth Sailing and Angling Club:

Sidmouth SC is a small, family-oriented dinghy sailing club with active racing and training programmes for both adults and children. Our open-sea sailing has made Sidmouth a popular location for a number of large events...

There's been sailing at Sidmouth for a year or two. In the 1920s it was mainly the twenty or so boats of the fishing fleet which occasionally raced and these boats would have formed the nucleus of the Corinthian Sailing Club. In 1936 Sidmouth Sailing Club was formed...

The Port Royal Club plays host to other Sidmouth groups, including the relatively new Gig Club:

Sidmouth Gig Club was formed in 2009 and is based at the Port Royal Club, Sidmouth. Our aim is to bring this fast growing sport to our beautiful town of Sidmouth.
The club is continually extending and we now have 2 gigs 'Alma' and 'Keith Owen', and an ever growing rowing membership list!

The Port Royal Club also presents itself as a welcome venue for events - not least the annual Folk Festival:

"But, for me and for a growing number of other people, the sessions at the Sidmouth Sailing Club have come to hold a very special place in our hearts. Somebody said to me that the Sailing Club Sessions are like a cuddly woolly blanket that just wraps around everybody and makes them feel welcome. I couldn't agree more and obviously many others feel that way because the numbers of devotees to the Sailing Club sessions just keep growing."

But the Sidmouth Sailing Club sessions have come to hold a very special place in my heart and the hearts of an increasing number of other people. Someone once compared the Sailing Club Sessions to a warm wool blanket that just envelops everyone and makes them feel at home. I couldn't agree more, and judging by how many people attend the Sailing Club programmes, clearly many others do as well.
