CUTTING energy bills and conserving the environment are key aims of a new community group, setting up soon in Sidmouth.

The new scheme is the brainchild of the Sid Valley Energy Action Group.
SidEnergy – a purchasing scheme for homes and businesses in the local area – launches at 7pm on Thursday, November 14, at the Norman Lockyer Observatory.
The group says it will explore utility solutions pioneered in Norway. It also intends to negotiate favourable terms for energy conservation measures and home generation systems.
“In Norway, there is no standing charge for utilities,” said Derek Chant, Chairman of SVEAG. “Instead the pricing is worked on the basis of the cheapest rate applying to the minimum amount required to live. After that it gets more expensive.

“This promotes frugality in use of the utility - gas, electricity, water, sewerage – and it means that the poorest in society are not unduly penalised for the basic necessities of life.”
SidEnergy is also hosting an open homes event on February 15 and 16. People will be able to see properties with different constructions and energy-saving methods to show them what they could do with their own homes in order to reduce bills.
