The Future of Health in Sidmouth: Clinical Commissioning Group for Eastern Devon

The Deputy Head of the CCG for the Northern, Eastern & Western locality, Sue Cutting, opened the recent Futures Forum meeting on the future of health in Sidmouth:

Sue Cutting [Eastern Locality Urgent Care Programme Lead; Deputy Head of Commissioning for the Clinical Commissioning Group (part of the Northern, Eastern & Westerly Locality – or NEW Devon CCG) aka Wakley] felt that engagement with the public was key to the commissioning role of what is the country’s largest CCG – and with new challenges being faced, for example Sidmouth’s ageing population now above the Devon norm, it was vital to address people’s needs and to engage with the public.

The CCG replaces the Primary Care Trusts
- and is responsible for commissioning and delivering NHS services.

The NHS commissioning system was previously made up of primary care trusts and specialised commissioning groups. Most of the NHS commissioning budget is now managed by 211 clinical commissioning groups (CCGs). These are groups of general practices which come together in each area to commission the best services for their patients and population.

The Eastern Locality is part of the Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). It has a population of c380,800 and is represented by four sub-localities: Exeter, Mid Devon, WEB (Woodbury, Exmouth and Budleigh) and Wakley (Axminster, Seaton, Sidmouth, Honiton and Ottery St Mary). Sub localities are smaller populations within Eastern Devon where care is commissioned uniquely to ensure it meets their different needs.

There have been several 'health summits' held by the Eastern Locality over the summer. The issues raised at the summit for the area covered by Sidmouth ('Wakley') are as follows:

> Physiotherapy – Local and waiting times
> Access to appointments – Primary and Secondary Care
> Access to care closer to home
> Service change – changes to the services and communication
> Transport
> Local community hospitals and MIU’s
> Mental Health
