HOW TO SET UP AN ARBORETUM

Hugh Angus will give this talk at Bicton College on 26 March 0930 and at 2pm will join group for tour of Sir John Cave’s arboretum at Sidbury Manor.     Numbers limited, please contact Diana East 01395 519275     or info@sidmoutharboretum.org.uk  for tickets/details.

iTREE SURVEY

Final volunteer training days 24/25 April and 8 May.    We are well ahead with the planning for this valley wide tree survey.     More help will be needed, get in touch please if you would like a day exploring the valley!

ANNUAL TREE DAY 

June 28 at Kennaway House.   Several speakers lined up:  Jon Stokes, Kevin Frediani, Hugh Angus of course, Richard Jinks.      Details to follow.

Busy finalising reprint for Sidmouth, new leaflet for Sidbury which will be launched at an event probably May.

PLANTING

Many small tree planting projects achieved this winter:  

MARKET PLACE renewed with hawthorn  ‘Pauls Scarlet’.

BALFOUR MANOR verge  Station Road – 3 Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’

KEBLE’S SEAT   Thanks to Clinton Devon Estates for chance to celebrate John Keble’s appreciation of Sidmouth and the magnificent views from Muttersmoor.   Sir Jonathan Phillips, Warden of Keble College, Oxford, joined in the celebration.  Together with Lord Clinton and Diana East, he planted 3 copper beech trees to echo the ancient copper beech in Pusey Quad in Oxford.  Elizabeth Cunliffe gave a short introduction to the life of Keble, Peter and Margaret Moss, John Dyson and Liz Bramley formed the choir for a hymn and Rev Handel Bennett conducted a blessing of the trees.

STOWFORD RISE -  triangle of EDDC land west of Waitrose.     Sidmouth and Sid Valley Rotary have TREES IN CRISIS project – each club to plant 50 trees.  Well we planted 200 – mainly hedge and shrub but with oak and cherry.   Should greatly improve this busy intersection on A3052 / improve air quality, create habitat, something a bit different from other public plantings.     Tell us if you like it please.
