SOMETHING fishy will be happening at the Ham when all things ‘in, on and from the sea’ are celebrated when Sidmouth stages a festival to celebrate its coastal location.
Residents young and old have been urged to keep the bank holiday Monday of April 21 free after the event was given the go-ahead.
The first Sidmouth Sea Fest will take place from 11am to 6pm with a concert also set for the evening from 7.30pm to 11pm.
Sidmouth Town Council gave organisers permission to use its land last week.
The festival will celebrate Sidmouth’s status as a coastal community and give families the chance to learn about local fishing and its history and to take part in activities on the sea and get creative. A chance to make flags for the Ham and cooking demonstrations are in the pipeline.
“We would like to invite all those involved in sea and beach based activities to come together on the day to celebrate all that Sidmouth has to offer in, on and from the sea,” said Matt Booth, one of the festival’s organisers.
They want people of all ages in Sidmouth to contribute to the day knitting sustainable fish types and say the mural wall already at the Ham can act as inspiration as it features mackerel, John Dory, sardines, plaice and starfish for fun.
The Herald reported last month how the festival is part of a €600,000 EU funded project called TourFish which aims to improve the environment and economics around inshore fishing across the English Channel.
A conference will be staged in Sidmouth in 2015 which it is hoped will tie in with the town’s second Sea Fest.
Matt thanked the town council for its support. Groups with an interest in showcasing activities on the day can contact Louise Cole at loulou.cole@tiscali.co.uk.
