The UK has a strong history in nuclear power generation, including the world’s first commercial generating reactor at Calder Hall.  Especially today, nuclear generation has a crucial role in the low carbon energy mix. It currently supplies electricity to 20 % of the UK.

This presentation will explain the fundamentals of nuclear energy and take a historical view through the key milestones and developments in nuclear technology including an overview of Nuclear New Build, the Hinkley Point C project and the current challenges faced by the nuclear industry.

Narmeen Rehman read Engineering Science at Oxford University. Following graduation, she completed the EDF Energy nuclear graduate training scheme and is a mechanical engineer currently working in the Structural Integrity branch on the behaviour of high temperature materials.
