Futures Forum: Otter Valley Association: launch of heritage project ... Sunday 14th September

The Sid Vale Association will be launching its own local heritage asset project this coming Monday 26th January - and members of the local community are being asked to nominate what are thought of as 'heritage assets' at the Library.

There will be an exhibition at the Library - and a box to leave nominations - for two weeks, to Saturday 7th February. This will be open to all.

The latest Herald also has a nomination form to fill in.

The SVA's website has the details of the process:

Heritage Asset Project

What makes the Sid Valley special?
What would you miss if it disappeared tomorrow?
The SVA is embarking on an exciting new project, looking at our rich and diverse local heritage.   We are working in partnership with Devon’s Historic Environment Team, East Devon District Council, the Museum and other groups to identify and list heritage assets of local significance in the Sid Valley.
We are also seeking partners and volunteers to help with this work. If you would like to become part of the SVA’s team, please contact us.

“You can nominate any treasured garden or green space – or even a tree.”
NOMINATIONS WANTED
As a first step, we are asking members of the local community to nominate ‘local historical assets’.
Do you have a building or feature in the historic environment, not already protected by National Listing (see below), that has a degree of significance meriting consideration in planning decisions?
Now is your chance to nominate your best loved or iconic features.
Heritage assets are not just buildings but can be:
1. Cultural landscapes
2. Anything related to social history
3. Patterns of settlement
4. Parks & Gardens
5. Village greens
6. Landmarks of community value
7. Interesting items such as street furniture
The Sid Valley Association is working with the local community to identify a proposed list of Local Heritage Assets. Half of all local authorities in the country already have agreed lists in place as encouraged by central government.
East Devon District Council (EDDC) is committed to this in its new Local Plan. Anything accepted by EDDC for local listing does not gain additional protection from alteration BUT has to be taken into account in any subsequent planning applications.

“You can nominate any piece of heritage as an ‘asset’.”

Now is your chance to nominate, for example:
Well loved places
Agricultural buildings
Arts and Crafts houses
Buildings rejected by English Heritage for listing
Former Grade III listed  buildings
WWII structures
Railway remnants
Water management features
Post boxes/Telephone boxes
Memorials
Walls/pillars
Street furniture – signs, statues, lighting
The choice is yours – ask your family, friends and neighbours. Walk around your neighbourhood and see what you would like to nominate.

“You can nominate any building or area. And don’t forget other parts of the Sid Valley! This photo was taken by Eric Brooks and appears in the SVA 2015 calendar.”
The PROCESS
The first step is for you to nominate assets which you feel have local historical value.
Thank you. Then, either:
> email it to: heritage@sidvaleassociation.org.uk; or
> post it to: ‘Heritage Project’, SVA, Sidmouth Museum, Hope Cottage, Church Street, Sidmouth EX10 8LY
> drop it in at the collection box at Sidmouth Library Monday 26th January to Saturday 7th February
The SVA and volunteer team will then research the nominations, gather any further information and may contact you for further clarification. You are more than welcome to become part of the SVA’s team: please contact us.
The SVA panel will make an initial assessment against the criteria and using community feedback.
There will be an exhibition of preliminary nominations in spring 2015 with a final exhibition and community consultation in the summer.
We plan to submit the proposed list to East Devon District Council with an anticipated publication date at the end of 2015.
Check that your nomination is not already listed by looking at the list of Nationally Grade I & II listed buildings and structures (walls etc.):
