The SVA's heritage asset project was launched earlier this week:

Pop along to the museum and fill out a 'nomination form' or two, saying what you'd like to be recognised as a 'heritage asset'.

It can be anything - including a green lane:

The local press have heartily covered the project:

What makes the Sid Valley special?

Britain’s oldest civic society is launching a project to catalogue what makes the Sid Valley special - and residents are being asked for their input.

With the help of conservation experts, the Sid Vale Association (SVA) is compiling a list of ‘local historical assets’ – iconic features in the area that have cultural value but are not covered by the Grade I and II listing system.

Possible nominations could include anything from a wall or piece of street furniture to entire buildings or landscapes.

SIDMOUTH: Campaign to protect heritage assets

27th January 2015 by Jack Dixon jack@pemedia.co.uk

A COMMUNITY campaign has been launched to protect some of Sidmouth’s most treasured historical buildings and monuments.

Members of the Sid Vale Association’s history group are leading a new drive to rescue many of the town’s best-loved heritage ‘assets’ from the risk of redevelopment and are calling on local people to show their support.

The group is inviting residents to come forward with suggestions of historically significant sites that are not currently listed but which ought to be protected.

Agricultural buildings, arts and crafts hubs and railway remnants are typical of the sort of sites that could be added to an asset list and presented to East Devon District Council.

Other possible assets include wartime structures, memorials, statues and post or telephone boxes, as well as buildings that have previously been rejected by English Heritage for listing.
