when the Vision Group holds its monthly science session:
Café Scientifique
Café Scientifique is a place where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology in a relaxed atmosphere.
In Sidmouth, we normally meet once a month (except during some festive breaks). The meetings take place on the third Tuesday of each month from 3pm to 4pm.
This is the format: a 15-20 min introduction by an expert will be followed by a Q&A period or a general discussion, if the participants so wish.
As there is no charge for this venue please buy a drink.
No experience is necessary.

Professor Richard Betts of the Met Office will be leading the discussion:
Richard is Head of the Climate Impacts strategic area, which includes climate impacts research and also the climate change consultancy unit.
The Met Office's main role in climate impacts research is to facilitate a more integrated approach to the assessment of climate change impacts, in collaboration with specialists across the wider academic community.
A large part of our impacts research, therefore, involves examining the interactions between different impacts areas, such as agriculture, natural ecosystems, water resources, glaciers, urban areas and human health.

Profile
Richard is Chair in Climate Impacts at the University of Exeter and Head of Climate Impacts in the Met Office Hadley Centre.
He has worked in climate modelling since 1992, with a particular interest in the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and the interactions with other impacts of climate change such as on water resources. He is also interested in the wide-ranging effects of land use and land cover change on climate.
He leads the EU Framework 7 Project HELIX (High-End cLimate Impacts and eXtremes), which assesses the impacts of climate change at 2, 4 and 6°C global warming above pre-industrial state.
Richard was a lead author on the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in Working Group 1 (The Physical Science Basis), leading the assessment of the influences of land cover change on climate and contributing to the assessment of climate change impacts on fresh water. He played a similar role in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment.
He is also lead author on the IPCC 5th Assessment Report in Working Group 2 (Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability), responsible for assessing the impacts of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems.

The event will kick off on Tusday 3rd March at 3pm at Costa's cafe on Old Fore St (pedestrianised zone) - and will finish at 4pm.
The event is free and open to all.
