Over the past decade many communities have lost local amenities and buildings which they value. In response to this, there has been a significant rise in communities becoming more active and joining together to save and protect buildings which they want to see preserved for future generations to enjoy. Local Listing is one of the ways to help save what we value and this workshop will explore the process involved.

Malvern Council to work in partnership with local civic societies to draft heritage guidance and identify local heritage assets
Welcoming the news that Malvern Hills District Council has confirmed that it will work in partnership with local civic societies to identify local heritage assets, Dr Freddie Gick, Chair of Civic Voice said:
“Local heritage listing is a means for the community and local authority to come together to identify heritage assets that are valued as distinctive elements of the local historic environment. With the council and community working together at the guidance stage, it will ensure that the community can influence the final document and help decide what buildings should be included. Malvern is demonstrating the leadership that we hope other areas across the country will follow”.

Colchester Borough Council is undertaking the annual review of Colchester's Local List and is calling for feedback from the local community on any buildings or assets that they feel should be included or removed from the list.
Colchester's rich history is reflected in the diversity of historic buildings and assets found throughout the Borough, but not all of these heritage structures currently have legal protection. To provide better protection, the Council worked with a panel of local historic building experts to prepare Colchester's first Local List in 2011.
A Local List is a list of heritage assets that, although not suitable for designation nationally as a Listed Building, are considered historically or architecturally important at a local level. These buildings are valued by the local community and make a significant contribution to the character and setting of Colchester and the surrounding villages.

President of Civic Voice, Griff Rhys Jones, congratulates Civic Voice member the Norwich Society for campaign to give greater protection to more than 100 listed buildings.
Welcoming the announcement that, after three years of campaigning by Civic Voice member the Norwich Society, Norwich City Council is to add more than 100 buildings to a Local List of Heritage Assets, Griff Rhys Jones, President of Civic Voice said;
“This is great news. Across the country, civic groups are working hard daily to gain extra protection for the buildings they value. We are delighted to see the Norwich Society achieve such success. This shows that, when communities work together, they can have a voice on issues that matter to them. I congratulate the Norwich Society for achieving recognition for these local heritage assets.”
