Vision for Sidmouth
invited Rob Hopkins, the Transition Guru, to speak during this year’s “Climate
Change Week”.
Totnes, he said, was
rather like a social lab, where social dreams and projects could be trialled. It
was uplifting to hear Rob speak in person, and share his vision of community
possibilities – from supporting local mini-traders to a David Bowie pound note!
Gently demonstrating that practicality and playfulness can combine, wiping some
of the grey from top-down, recession-sapped, Britain.
Rob's main theme was
Atmos, the Totnes community-right-to-build project which will convert the vast,
disused, Dairy Crest site into a community space. A multi-use zone, distilling,
where possible, the hopes, dreams and ideas posted by over 2,000 Totnes people.
A space mindful of the future, yet sensitive to the past. (Atmos refers both to
climate change, and Brunel’s former pumping-station on the site). Aiming to use
sustainable, highly local, materials, it will also preserve memories – anecdotes
collected from the oldest generation, whose dairy-memories will be visibly
included in the weave.
