Vote for your favourite Exeter Pound designs £E1

ECHO readers are being asked to pick which designs should feature on the new £E1 note.

Children were invited to submit creative designs for either side of the note, due to be put into circulation this autumn.

Two designs have been shortlisted by judges, with the final choice now down to a public vote. Simply cut out the coupon below and post it or drop if off at the Echo’s new city centre offices in Little Queen Street, or alternatively the Civic Centre in Paris Street. The vote closes at 5pm on Monday, April 12.

The design for a special Rugby World Cup inspired £15 note featuring Jack Nowell has already been revealed in the Echo.

And designs featuring other leading figures from the city will be revealed shortly.

Meanwhile, Exeter City Football Club has agreed to become a partner to Exeter Pound. Discussions have begun to explore how the club will accept the new local currency at St James’s Park.

Gill Westcott, chairman of the board of directors of Exeter Pound, said: “Exeter City Football Club is a key player in the community. We will be delighted if the Exeter Pound can be used at the club.”

Stagecoach has also agreed to become a partner to Exeter Pound. Parallel discussions have opened as to how people might pay for their bus fares in Exeter Pounds.

Martyn Goss, director of Exeter Pound, said after the initial meeting with Stagecoach: “Exeter Pound is delighted to be developing a partnership with Stagecoach South West. If local people are able to spend Exeter Pounds for travelling as well as leisure, it will be of significant benefit to the city and its communities.”

Daniel Hillier, director of Exeter Pound and vice-chairman of the Exeter branch of the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “I am delighted the Exeter Pound is moving forward in such a positive way. In expanding partnerships across the city, we are aiming to work for the benefit of everyone in Exeter.”

Swing Low Sweet Chariot moment captured on new Exeter Pound note

By Exeter Express and Echo | Posted: March 24, 2015

The £E15 note marking the moment in Exeter

THE first time Swing Low Sweet Chariot is thought to have been sung in Exeter is to be commemorated on a bank note.

On August 19 1875 the Fisk University Jubilee Singers, a black American gospel choir, came from the United States to tour the UK. As part of their nationwide tour, they played to a packed Victoria Hall in Queen Street, Exeter now the Victoria House building of Exeter College.

The story of the Fisk singers was recently re-discovered by the Telling Our Stories, Finding Our Roots Project hosted by the Global Centre in Exeter.

First design revealed for new Exeter bank notes as Chiefs’ star Jack Nowell

By Exeter Express and Echo | Posted: March 09, 2015

The planned design for the Exeter Pound note

Exeter Chiefs player and England Rugby Union star Jack Nowell is to feature on one of Exeter’s own bank notes, the Echo can reveal.

Exeter Chiefs have given their backing to a new local currency due to launch in the city later this year.

However, there is still time for residents to get involved in creating their own design to feature on one of notes.

Jack’s image will feature on a special £E15 note issued to mark the Rugby World Cup arriving in the city. The Chiefs have also pledged to accept the Exeter Pounds and will look to spend them with their suppliers.
