NAKED and near-naked bicycle riders are set to pedal through Exeter on Saturday with the return of the World Naked Bike Ride.

The “as bare as you dare” event is part of a global protest to raise awareness of the vulnerability of cyclists, highlighting the lack of facilities for cyclists, oppose oil dependency, support the use of sustainable transport, endorse the joys of cycling and promote body confidence.

A spokesman said “Some parts of Exeter have very good cycle routes but other parts that are busy do not, or have shared use with pedestrians which raises its own issues.

“Once you get out of the city you are taking your life in your hands or, more correctly, someone else’s hands. So one of the key messages of the day is about encouraging drivers to give a little bit more space to vulnerable users of the road.

“We believe there is nothing rude about non-sexual nudity and there is no intention to offend. The majority of the feedback we get from the public is positive and we are not aware that anyone has made a complaint in the past.

“The event is open and anyone who wishes to join us is welcome – clothed or otherwise, just bring a bike – the operative phrase is As Bare as you Dare, though under-18s must be clothed and accompanied by a parent or guardian.
There will be a police escort and marshals so everyone will need to be on their best behaviour.”

Riders will meet at Trews Weir floodplain from 11am for body painting and briefings with theride starting at 1pm.
