Devolution: a new deal for rural England?

Dorset is also showing interest:
Dorset, Lincolnshire, Hertfordshire CCs and Wiltshire Council have moved to seek devolution deals now the government has made clear it will be receptive to bids from all types of authorities.
Dorset CC leader Robert Gould (Con) said the county, its six districts and adjacent unitaries Bournemouth and Poole BCs were developing combined authority proposals, he hoped would go to the government in the autumn.
“It will be around economic development, skills, housing delivery, transport and coastal protection,” he said. “It has to go through each council’s processes, which will obviously take a little time.”

Devon is looking to combine with neighbours:
Devon, Somerset, Plymouth and Torbay
Devon and Somerset CCs have expressed an interest in forming a combined authority to seek additional powers over skills and jobs. The counties are both in the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership along with unitaries Plymouth City Council and Torbay Council. Devon’s leader John Hart (Con) this month told LGC he was “sure” they would be keen to participate.

A crucial summit to discuss the potential for the devolution of significant powers from Government to the South West has caught the imagination with more than 25 authorities attending.
Leader of Somerset County Council John Osman has called the Summit on Wednesday to kick-start a discussion about the future role of devolution in Somerset – and the whole of the South West.
The county council is committed to making sure Somerset benefits from any moves towards devolution in the South West, which could see key decision-making powers passed down from central government to a more local level.
Mr Osman said: "These are exciting times. We are keen to make the most of devolution and maximize the benefits for our residents who are often left short changed by the traditional formula for funding. We in Somerset are already working closely with other authorities to secure greater devolved powers.
"There are many successful partnerships and examples of joint working already taking place in the South West. This is a meeting to explore ways in which authorities across the region might work together to gain greater powers.
The meeting is taking place at Dillington House, near Ilminster, and is expected to attract around 70 representatives from more than 25 local authorities.
