Exmouth action group criticises new proposals for redevelopment of Exmouth seafront

The Exmouth seafront plans

A PRESSURE group has spoken out over new proposals for the redevelopment of Exmouth seafront. Members of action group Save Exmouth Seafront have criticised a planning application for the scheme put forward by East Devon District Council.

But the authority said the plans should not have come as a surprise to anyone. And it said it welcomed all comments about the scheme.

The plans include the realignment of Queen’s Drive, parking areas and demolition of several beach huts and the now empty DJ’s Diner CafĂ©.

Save Exmouth Seafront chairman Denis O’ Day said the group was under the impression that a planning application wouldn’t be submitted until the legal process had been completed. He also claimed that more public consultation should have taken place before an application was made.

He said: “We were astonished to read about this planning application, because whenever we have asked for further information about the latest proposals for the seafront the district council has always given the impression that nothing will be decided until all the legal issues with the current businesses have been resolved.

“As these are still ongoing, it seems that this is yet another smokescreen from East Devon District Council, which is actually hiding its true agenda from the public.” He added: “To add insult to injury, all these plans are forging ahead without the full, independent public consultation which we have been requesting for many weeks.”

A spokesman for at Devon District Council said it welcomed comments on plans for the site. He said: “Outline planning permission for the Queen’s Drive development was approved in December 2013 which included the realignment of the road. Therefore the current application should come as no surprise to residents and businesses, as it is first phase of the development on the Queen’s Drive site.

“The legal procedures underway with tenants form part of this ongoing regeneration process. As always, we encourage and welcome responses to planning applications, and this one is no exception.”

Regeneration: another word for “aren’t we clever – we call it “ongoing regeneration” and then we can do anything we like”.

The campaign group has suggested how comments can be fed into the planning application:

Hi- I was wondering if there could be some help available regarding objecting to the revised plans? A summary of key points and a little detail into best way toobject to those points would be very useful- I really don't want to waste my objection by not utilising it to it's full potential. Also could you list all planning reference numbers so as not to miss any of them. I would appreciate some help with this, and imagine other people would too. Thanks very much

Exmouth Splash - Public Opinion & Discussion Page Hi Monty. Planning refs are 15/2487/MRES and 15/2493/FUL. These can be found online here -https://planning.eastdevon.gov.uk/online-applications/ , direct links do not work so this a llink where you can search for the planning proposals, you can also view at the Town Hall. Organising objections to planning applications is ultimately unhelpful to the impact of the comments, so we would simply urge you, and anyone else, to view the the applications and respond to them with your comments focussed on the plans themselves.
Search for Planning Applications, Appeals and Enforcements by keyword, application reference, postcode or by a single line of an address.

Kay Bee Isn't the council supposed to be doing a consultation?! And maybe it will encourage us if people on here tell us what action they've taken? We must do something! I know the seafront is a bit tired, but I think low-key, careful development is the answer.

There are no supporting comments at the planning application 15/2493/FUL:

This planning application is nothing other than enabling works and a precursor to EDDC's flawed 'splash' proposals to redevelop this much loved area of Exmouth seafront. Given that the proposals still have to go to public consultation and that the 'splash' has not yet received planning permission, this application is being made far too early as there is still too much uncertainty of what will happen in the long run as, not for the first time, insufficient information is being provided by EDDC.

What we do know is that there is considerable opposition to EDDC's half-baked proposals to regenerate an area of Exmouth which doesn't need to be regenerated. All it needs is a light touch refurbishment. Furthermore, perfectly sound, long-standing local businesses have been closed and those that remain are being suffocated by the heavy handed tactics of the council.

If you need any more reasons to decline this application - the area in question is a high risk flood zone and there are badgers and badger setts on the land adjacent to the road which will be disturbed by these works.

Loved by locals and holiday makers alike and a well known landmark for Exmouth. This should be left alone and not filled in for developers to do as they please.

Looking for the - reason of comment destroying exmouth? couldn't find it. a family attraction enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of locals and tourists over the years. Yet all that is worried about is where the next lot of money will come from. We are not interested in water features or a new road. We want exmouth seafront to continue to attract the many tourists and locals year in year out and continue to do so for the future.
Needs to be a serious shake up in who wants Exmouth to be a seaside tourist attraction or a concrete graveyard.

Disgraceful idea I'm sure there must be a way to incorporate this iconic facility.

Objection to the removal of an iconic area that is enjoyed by so many local families and even more visitors to our outstanding seafront.
