Greenwich Maritime Centre sets sail

Date of release:  Wednesday, March 16, 2016
Greenwich Maritime Centre sets sailA new centre of research and teaching of all matters maritime has been launched at the University of Greenwich.
The Greenwich Maritime Centre has been set up to promote a greater understanding and social awareness of the relationships between sea and society, and to develop sustainable solutions for maritime issues.
More than one hundred people attended its launch at the university, from a diverse range of maritime organisations. The event featured welcomes from Michael Everard CBE, former chairman of F.T.Everard & Sons, a University of Greenwich honorary graduate and a senior figure in international shipping; and Dr June Balshaw, the university's Head of Department for History, Politics and Social Science.
The new Director of the Greenwich Maritime Centre (GMC), Dr Tim Acott, says: "The launch was a fantastic success. There is a great amount of energy and enthusiasm to build an internationally recognised centre of excellence, and of course it is most fitting that we are located in the world renowned Old Royal Naval College".
The centre carries out both research and teaching activities. It runs an MA programme in International Maritime Policy and is developing new courses in undergraduate programmes, for example Island Nation: Britain and the Sea 1800 to the Present, as part of a BA (Hons) History programme.
Research initiatives include contributions from across the university and cover topics such as responsible tourism, small-scale fisheries, the movement of ships in the Solent, digital technologies, ship design, maritime safety and evacuation, and ocean governance and security.
The centre's first art exhibition has been launched, showing a collection of work by photo-journalist Vince Bevan, titled Landscapes of Fishing. The exhibition is open to the public and will run in the university's Heritage Gallery until Thursday 24 March.

GMC will host its first conference, Society and the Sea, between 15 and 16 September. For more details: http://www.gre.ac.uk/ach/gmc/events
An iBook produced by GMC, Responsible Tourism: A guide for tourism and sustainability in small-scale fisheries and agri-food, is now available for free via the Apple iBooks store or as a PDF from the TourFish website.
