Have your say on the future of Sidmouth seafront

LOCAL residents are being asked to help re-imagine the exciting future of Sidmouth seafront – but only have a week to submit their views and ideas.
A worldwide architecture competition was launched earlier this year to find a way to revitalize the Port Royal and East Beach section of Sidmouth.
Designs were submitted from far and wide and a panel of expert judges, with backgrounds in architecture, economy, design and local interests, chose five candidates they felt were suitable and interesting.
The five options are now on display at Kennaway House until July 12th and the organisers of the com- petition are seeking public feedback to the different development proposals by voting, for just one, and offering any observations.
Residents are being asked to pick out which design they like and why they like it. At the end of the con- sultation the results will be gathered together to help inform the final decision. The plans on show this week are not final plans, but more a flavour of what could be done to the seafront – land and funds still need to be secured.
The architecture competition was designed to seek imaginative ideas that engage with all possible ways of redeveloping the area, including urban strategies, landscape approaches, and architectural proposals of one or more buildings.
It encouraged entrants to draw on the three aspects of sea, river and town and Sidmouth’s impressive coastal views, landscapes and varied architecture.
The five entries being displayed reflect the entire gamut of ideas to utilise the ailing space. The entries on display are ‘Seat’, ‘Pier’, ‘Landscape’, ‘Square’ and ‘Harbour’.
Seat: A grand structure on the seafront that is a destination for the arts, a rest point for visitors and a heart of local activity, it also tackles environmental issues through its use of gabion walls.

Pier: A pier with op: providing a year round venue, theatre, museum, and a viewing platform to enjoy the coast. Back on the land there is a community square, available for a variety of use.

Square: By redirecting the flow of traffic, introducing a multi purpose use square, and intensifying the presence of buildings, featurin a red sandstone faced building that would sit out in the water like an outcrg arts, eating and residential, the square would reconnect Port Royal with the town centre.

Landscape: A scheme to open up the River Sid and connect the seafront with the byes, using extensive hardscape and landscape. There would also be new buildings built alongside the Ham.

Harbour: A plan which is broken down into three elements – river walk and coastal path, water front spaces (harbour and sea pool), and a range of buildings (including restaurants, retail and residential) and public spaces.

Kennaway House is open from 10am to 4.30pm with the opportunity to make your views known all week.
