Comparing costs and personnel numbers of the 1949 NHS

When it comes to working out where we are and what to do about the NHS, it is very much about knowing what the figures are:
Futures Forum: The future of Sidmouth's hospital: getting the figures right
Futures Forum: The future of Sidmouth's hospital: “We need to define how many patients could be cared for in community hospitals.”
Futures Forum: The future of Sidmouth's hospital and care services >>> "looking at the statistics for over-85-year-olds, Sidmouth needs to retain its hospital beds"

As a correspondent notes:

When in the refurbished Maths Gallery within the Science Museum I came across the attached graphic of the NHS in 1949. It maps the numbers of personnel and costs at the time. Would be interesting to compare with current situation.
