Desperate plea to ease gridlock in Exeter

7 August 2017 at 5:21pm

Businesses in Exeter have made a desperate plea to Devon County Council to help ease gridlock in the city.

A wave of new housing developments and companies expanding mean the streets have become some of the most congested in the whole region.

Business owners now say it's affecting the ability of staff to do their jobs.

This means that the city is now ranked as one of the most congested in Europe, with drivers spending an average 10% of their time at the wheel stuck in gridlock

One extreme example occurred last Wednesday when a lorry overturned blocking the A38 on Haldon Hill. It resulted in travel chaos, as vehicles were diverted into the city centre at rush hour.

Those who monitor traffic in Exeter say there needs to be a rethink of the city's transport infrastructure, as it expands to accommodate hew homes and businesses.

Glen Woodcock from Exeter City Futures says we need to some different approaches to tackling the traffic problem.

A Devon Live special investigation

On Monday Devon Live launches a series of special reports into the county's congestion problems and the impact that pollution is having on people's lives.

Gridlocked Devon will look at some of the major challenges caused by congestion across the county and find out what is being done to encourage people to use other modes of transport.

A series of reports, live videos and investigations begin at 8.30am on Monday as Devon Live reporters take on a Top Gear inspired commuter challenge.

Starting from Topsham, four reporters will use four different modes of transport to travel five miles during rush hour traffic and reach the Devon Live office on Queen Street in central Exeter.

Each travelling by either car, bike, bus or train, the challenge will find what is the most time efficient way of commuting into the city. You can follow the event on Devon Live's Facebook page.

Investigations throughout the week will reveal the attitude of local authorities to sustainable travel and highlight some of Devon's pollution hotspots.

Gridlocked Devon will culminate on Friday with a Facebook Live debate tackling some of the major travel problems facing the county.
