Welcome to the 2nd Newsletter of 2017 from
Sidmouth Civic Arboretum (SCA) Newsletter. We hope to keep you informed of our
activities and events in the Sid Valley through the newsletter.
Tree Evening, Kennaway House, November 24th
The program for the
Tree Evening this autumn at Kennaway House on November 24th at 6:00pm is now
almost complete. There will be songs, poems, stalls and talks related to the
trees and woods around and about Sidmouth. We will be having talks, amongst
others, from Jon Freeman of the Great Trees in the Clyst Valley project and John
Wilding of Clinton Devon Estates, as well as wardens from the NT and East Devon
District Council, giving more extended talks on their areas of expertise and
experience.
We will also be offering the opportunity to sponsor trees
which we are planning to plant this winter.
Please come along and join
us if you can.
Activities and Events
Building on the routing of the Sidmouth
arboretum town walk through Sidholme, we were able to secure the use of
Sidholme’s grounds and the music room to set up a tree identification challenge
for the children of year 5 at Sidmouth School. Ed Dolphin our treasurer designed
the task, which posed a series of yes/ no questions to the children enabling
them to identify 8 trees. The weather was lovely and the walk to and from the
school gave us a further opportunity to discuss other trees along the route. All
in all this was a very successful day for which many thanks to the staff of
Sidholme who made us so welcome.
We have been doing more work in Sidholme
and have identified 24 species of trees that we hope to include in a leaflet for
the site alone. This is being done in conjunction with the The Friends of
Sidholme Garden and Sidmouth in Bloom.
Walks Leaflets
The committee has walked the 3 Arboretum walks,
taking new photos to publish on the web site. We are delighted to have secured
the funding to reprint the Sidmouth town walk leaflet as the tourist information
centre and hotels were asking for additional copies.
Diana East is
progressing well on securing sponsorship to re-publish the Sidbury walk leaflet
and this will soon be available.
Jill Gray has completely re-designed the
Salcombe Regis walk to allow it to link to the town walk from the seafront or
via The Byes. This Salcombe Regis walk was used as our contribution to the
Sidmouth Walking Festival which 30 people completed on another lovely day in
September. We had visitors from Scotland, the Midlands and Bristol area as well
as more local walkers enjoying the scenery.
We are planning to walk the 3
walks as part of our first tree week in April 2018.
The Knowle
Ed led the Arboretum group’s response to The Knowle
planning application in which we made the case for keeping several of the
existing trees which would have been removed under the current plan.
Volunteer Working Party
Graham Hutchinson has prepared a tree
maintenance and planting programme for the autumn and winter months 2017 – 2018.
