The Bank of the South West > Tony Greenham's presentation from the RSA in Exeter

How can we build a strong, resilient local economy?
Futures Forum: How to build a good local economy

One idea is a local bank:
Futures Forum: A Bank of the South West > to serve the everyday financial needs of ordinary people, local community groups, and small and medium sized companies >> Tony Greenham in Exeter: Thursday 26th October

Here is a report of the event:

The Bank of the South West

Having heard Tony Greenham last month, it seems we’ve much to gain from having a regional bank – offering secure deposit and current accounts and which invests in businesses in the South West. The RSA is supporting the establishment of a network of regional banks, which will serve people of ordinary means, community groups and small and medium sized businesses, and be committed to branches and relationship banking. People want to have a local bank they can go in and do business.  SW Bank branches won’t all be staffed, but will perform all the services of a local branch, including the opportunity to talk to someone by video if needed.

Ordinary bank lending is dominated by finance and property – productive lending with support for the long term has hardly grown at all.  A South West Bank would be customer owned, with open and transparent charges (including charges for current accounts), and would take account of social and environmental value.  To find out more see Tony Greenham's presentation.
