Sidmouth Primary pupils learn about plastic waste

The BBC’s Blue Planet 2 and a Tipton writer’s book inspired Sidmouth Primary School pupils to implore the Queen and Prime Minister to do more about plastic pollution.
Author Jo Earlam visited Sidmouth Primary School, where pupils are using her book, Tuamor the Turtle, to learn about pollution
Author Jo Earlam visited youngsters last week, when also they wrote prequels to Tuamor the Turtle.
She said: “I’m thrilled at the positive and engaging way they responded to my book and the warm welcome they gave me. It’s great to see that they are getting the message about the impact litter has on the environment. They’ve been using the book as the basis for a research study into plastic pollution, and also watching Blue Planet 2.
“They’ve written their own prequels of Tuamor’s story to demonstrate their English language skills, written letters to the Prime Minister and the Queen asking them to do more to help, and also done their own artwork. I found them to be very knowledgeable on the subject and it was clear that they had done their own independent research and were well informed about the issues.”
One letter to the Queen said: “Dear Ma’am, you need to stop all of this intolerable suffering before it is irreversible. We know you have the country at heart so why not our seas? Please, please help.”
Another warned Prime Minister Theresa May that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea.
In teacher Kate Watts’ class they have also decided to forego classroom Christmas presents this year and adopt a turtle instead.
