Sidmouth has the largest number of listed buildings in East Devon

When it comes to listed buildings, Sidmouth is doing pretty well:

Although the District Council does not see them as a priority:

Unfortunately we currently only have one Conservation Officer available and therefore only have the capacity to provide pre-application advice regarding works to Grade I and II* listed buildings. We will not give advice related to Grade II listed buildings until we have more capacity.

Listed buildings - East Devon

Following on from research by a correspondent, if we look at a list of Grade I and II Listed Buildings in East Devon:

Exmouth has 128
East Buddleigh has 61
Honiton has 104
Buddleigh Salterton has 40
Beer has 25

Sidmouth has 358!

And to compare with similar towns in other parts of Devon:

Teignmouth has 133
Tiverton has 290

The East Devon List is not split out from Devon and you can see the numbers on this page:

Only Exeter has more, and that is an entity unto itself...

Not only does Sidmouth beat all other East Devon towns by a mile but it is by far the top of the table for the whole of Devon.

There is of course the ongoing saga at Knowle:

Futures Forum: Knowle relocation project: the setting of the Listed folly - and challenging the mass and positioning of the buildings

But the Knowle is not a nationally listed building:

And so it seems that 'locally listed' buildings are even less of a concern:

Although the SVA is trying to do its bit:

As is the Neighbourhood Planning process:

Finally, what does a group of listed buildings - national and local - add up to?
