THE ONLY CAMPAIGNING NEWSPAPER GROUP IN EAST DEVON CLOSES

5 JAN 2018

Owl says: a sad loss. But not surprising when competing titles from Archant Newspapers (Midweek Herald, Sidmouth Herald, Exmouth Journal) for example received 80% of EDDC’s advertising.

The eastern side of East Devon has now not only lost community hospital beds and transport links it has lost the only titles not simply regurgitating press releases passed off as “news” but actively supported the community with real news and genuine investigative journalism.

Sadness as newspaper series covering East Devon shuts with loss of 20 jobs

View News issued a statement on its Facebook page confirming the decision

Edward Oldfield 17:42, 5 JAN 2018

A series of newspapers covering Devon, Dorset and Somerset has closed blaming a fall in revenue.

The View From series was based in Lyme Regis, Dorset, with editions covering Axminster, Seaton and Honiton in Devon, Bridport, Dorchester and Weymouth in Dorset, and South Somerset.

It is understood around 20 jobs have been made redundant as a result of the closure.

View News issued a statement on its Facebook page confirming the decision.

The statement said: "It is with great regret that the decision has been taken to close View From Newspapers with immediate effect due to falling advertising revenue and the continued difficult trading climate. Thank you to all our loyal readers & advertisers for your support over the past 12 years.‬"

A spokesman for the owners, quoted on the Holdthefrontpage media industry website, said: “Having acquired the titles out of administration in July of last year we agreed to continue publishing the loss-making titles for six months in a bid to give continued employment for the staff. But in the light of continued falling revenues, we have reluctantly decided that the titles are no longer sustainable.”

The View From titles had a combined weekly distribution of 33,000. They were bought by Truro City Football Club chairman Peter Masters in July 2017 following his buyout of the Liskeard-based Sunday Independent newspaper.

The last story published on the View News website was on January 3.

The news was met with sadness on social media...
