A free festival will be held on the Ham from 10am to 5pm and will be followed by a ticketed variety night from 7pm to 11pm.
Sea Fest is now in its fifth year and this year has a special focus on ‘rethinking plastics’.
The one-day community festival, which coincides with the start of Sidmouth Plastics Week, will highlight the issue of plastic pollution on beaches and in the oceans.
Author Jo Earlam will also be signing copies of her book Tuamor the Turtle - a message from a turtle about plastic pollution.
Sea Fest organiser, Sidmouth Coastal Community Hub, has organised a packed programme of arts, music and community activities. There will be environmental and science activities, music, storytelling and games. The event is aimed at all ages, focusing on a community and multi-generational approach. There will be a community dance led by local folk trio Mischief and Mayhem in the afternoon for everyone to join in.
Local groups taking part include Sidmouth in Bloom, the Sid Vale Association, Sidmouth Gig Club, the sailing club and lifeboat team, Sidmouth Science Festival and many more.
Sidmouth Gin will also be making gin on the Ham in a mobile copper distillery and East Devon Withy Pots will be showing off their crab pot heritage craft skills throughout the day. With a demonstration kitchen there will also be opportunities to learn how to dress a crab, fillet a fish, cook a Gujarati fish curry and other fish dishes. There will be a ‘plastic beach’ art installation in the main marquee and pop up beach on the Ham and a beach clean with Sidmouth Plastic Warriors from 10am to 11am.
The evening ticketed event will continue the coastal celebration theme with sea shanties from Sidmouth Sea Fest Community Choir, Sid Vale Productions performing Caught in a Storm, circus and comedy from Goronwy Thom, acrobatics from Oneface Mapacha followed by ENNOR – a very talented young Cornish band on the up - and Jabbrock, a local reggae band. Tickets are available at Sidmouth Trawlers and Paragon Books.
