country's economy through an era of rapid change. Essentially it's an excuse to
get local people together to experience, and then talk about, complex global
issues such as growth and sustainability in a novel way. Everybody

Party have organised a screening of the film ‘Drill Baby Drill’, a documentary
showing the disastrous effects of shale gas extraction, or fracking, on the
environment, water supply, air quality and human health. The film will be
followed by a discussion and Q&A session with Natalie Bennett, Green Party
leader, including what fracking might mean for the South west. This event will
take place at Exeter University on Saturday October 12 in the Queens Building,
Lecture Theatre 1, Queens Drive, 6pm – 8.30pm. The D bus will drop you right
outside!

local musicians. This is the first after the summer break and a chance to
re-emphasise the local links - food, music, volunteers and fun. Doors open at

Sustainable Ottery
Ottery Environment
Week
5th-12th October / Ottery St
MarySustainable Ottery are
organising a week-long series of events aiming to engage the whole community
with the subjects of food & energy. The week kicks off with an Open
Homes event on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 October
where a number of homes and businesses in Ottery that have made energy
efficiency improvements or installed renewables will open their doors to the
public to share ideas & experiences, includes, solar PV and thermal, ground
source heat pumps, biomass boilers plus ingenious ways to save energy and

During the week the schools will be engaged with local food
activities with chefs from the river Cottage and on Thursday evening
(10th, 6-7 pm) there is a trip to Bicton Earth to see all the latest
renewable energy technologies in action. Spaces are limited so please book via
info@sustainableottery.org.uk.
The week culminates with
an Environmental Exhibition at Ottery Parish church (Saturday 12
October, 10-4) with numerous stalls about generating energy, saving
energy and water, bee-keeping, local food producers, reducing waste and a point
to leave spectacles, hearing-aids, garden and DIY tools and sewing machines that
will be passed on for re-use by various charities. Bring along your old mobile
phones and printer cartridges too to help the local Scouts fund-raising . Also
various talks from the Gill Martin (Met Office) with the latest on Climate
Change), Cathy Debenham (You-gen) financial aspects of energy generation and the
Green Deal), Henry Gent on the problems faced by modern farmers and Kevin Cotter
(Love Local Food) with a story about food. Refreshments will be available during
the day, including ploughman’s lunches using local produce.

excellent speakers who have kindly agreed to come here from London: Fred
Pearce who writes for the New Scientist and who has authored a
thought-provoking book entitled "Peoplequake" challenging the inevitability of
continued population growth; Roger Martin, Chair of "Population Matters",
a passionate advocate of action to prevent a population explosion. The event
will be held at the Great Barn, a beautifully restored mediaeval barn in Higher
Ashton at 7.30 on Tuesday 15th October.
