Friends of the Byes: Tree Guardian Project

As part of National Tree Week
Futures Forum: Friends of the Byes... and National Tree Week
Sidmouth Primary School children, with a little help from FOTB and Sidmouth Garden Centre, planted fruit and nut trees in the Community Orchard - as well as about 200 saplings.
There was quite a centre-spread in last week's Herald:

National Tree Week celebrations in the Byes

Last Tuesday 26th November 2013 saw Friends of The Byes volunteers working with Sidmouth Primary School plant 200 tree saplings, 20 Apple Trees and with the help of Sidmouth Garden Centre 2000 more daffodils.

The school children nurtured the trees for a year under the FOTB Tree Guardian scheme and then brought them to the Community Orchard to plant them. “The children were so interested in what they were doing. It was lovely to see their enthusiasm.” Said Michael Horsnell from FOTB.
All 20 classes from Sidmouth Primary school planted their own Apple Tree in the Orchard. Sally Atkinson from FOTB talked about the positive legacy the children have helped to create. “The children will be able to remember and enjoy their tree for many years to come.”
As part of the Million Bulb Project Sidmouth garden centre provided 2000 bulbs and helped the children plant them around their trees and benches in the Orchard.

The Community Orchard was planted by FOTB volunteers in January 2012 on National Trust Land which is managed by EDDC, since then a large mixture of apple, plum, pear, fig, nectarine and cherry trees have been planted along with a mix of current, gooseberry and tayberry bushes.

Sidmouth Primary School Teacher Leah Stratton said. “It was a positive experience for the children to be involved with the community in this way, they were very excited and enthusiastic, especially when they learnt that they could return in the Autumn to harvest the fruit from their very own tree.”
