EAST Devon businesses stole the show at the Devon Tourism Awards on Thursday Evening (November 26th).
Colyton’s Higher Wiscombe luxury holiday cottages were the big winners on the night taking home two gold awards, for Dog Friendly Accommodation and Self Catering accommodation, as well as a silver (Sustainable Tourism) and to top it off were then crowned the overall ’Winner of Winners’ as well.
Ottery’s Mazzard Farm, who were also nominated for three awards, took home two silvers (Self Catering and Sustainable Tourism) and a bronze (International Visitor Experience) in what was an incredibly successful night for East Devon tourism.
River Cottage HQ came home with the gold award in the Artistic, Cultural and Learning Experience category.
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, owner of River Cottage, said: "This is fantastic news and a great tribute to the hard work of our fantastically talented team. ’Artistic, cultural and learning’ covers a lot of our core strengths, so we were delighted to come home with this particular award."
Dukes of Sidmouth received a bronze award in the Pub of the Year category, while fellow Sidmouth based operation, Oakdown Caravan Park, picked up a silver award in the Camping and Caravan Park category.
Honiton based Deer Park Hotel took home a silver in what was a hotly contested Venue and Businesses category. While the Thelma Hulbert Gallery picked up a bronze award in the Small Attraction category.
Axminster Tourist Information Centre won silver in the Visitor Information category. The TIC became a Not for Profit Organisation 18 months ago and is independent and self-financing. It has been working hard to promote the Axe Valley and Axminster as a Gateway town for the Jurassic Coast. New initiatives include an area guide, a website and social media.
The Sea Shanty Beach Cafe in Branscombe was highly commended in the Cafe & Tearoom category.
Awards organiser Robin Barker addressed the winners, saying: "You are all very special - in an era of ever dwindling public sector funding you are the industry leaders who can take Devon forward.
"More and more it will be businesspeople like you that must take the lead in putting Devon at the fore, ensuring it is at the forefront of what is one of the fast growing and most competitive industries in the world.”
