Sidmouth's Great Get Together > Sunday 18th June >>> Everyone is invited!

Sidmouth is getting together this Sunday:
Futures Forum: Sidmouth's Great Get Together > Sunday 18th June

Here's the press release with a little more info - and a lot more enthusiasm!

On Sunday, June 18th you are invited to Sidmouth’s Great Get Together.

There are similar events being held all over the country, with lots of local and national input. The idea, developed by the husband of the late MP Jo Cox , is designed to bring people together to celebrate their communities. In the light of the recent events in Manchester this idea is even more potent. Jo believed passionately in equality, the freedom of the individual and the importance of respecting everyone’s human rights. We want to celebrate the unique qualities of our generous community in this beautiful part of the world.

Everyone is invited! This is in no way a political event (thankfully the election will be out of the way by then!) What we would like to do is welcome members from throughout our community to enjoy an afternoon together sharing cakes, friendship and fun. Children are especially welcome. Bring along some outside games that children of all ages can join in. We are most grateful to Sidmouth Rugby Club for opening the Blackmore ground to us so there will be plenty of room. It would also be wonderful to welcome some of our elderly residents . If the sun is shining it will be a lovely place to relax.

There are no tickets or entrance fees - just turn up with a picnic and something to sit on. We will be making basic teas and coffees. If you would like to bring some food to share that would be great. We plan to open up at 2.30pm.

There will be over 100,000 similar events happening all over the country supported by such varied organisations as the WIs, Scouts and Guides, the Premier League, Help for Heroes, the RNLI. the RSPB, Amnesty International and faith communities.

We have so many advantages living here let’s celebrate together!

June 18th. 2.30pm.  Sidmouth’s Blackmore Rugby Ground.

See you there!

And here's a little more from the campaign group 38 Degrees:

"We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.” [1] Those were the words of Jo Cox, the MP who was tragically killed last summer. This weekend, there’s a chance to celebrate the things we have in common with our neighbours and friends.

Inspired by Jo Cox MP, people across the country are coming together this weekend to stand up for love and community. [2] It’s called The Great Get Together. It’s a weekend of events to bring neighbours, community groups, the old and the young together to have fun - and to show that we have lots in common.

One of the things us 38 Degrees-ers have in common is that we all want the world to be a better place. We believe it can be a better place. And we know it’s worth working together to make it a better place.

Of course it’ll take more than a few cups of tea at a street party to fix the problems we face as a country. But knowing our neighbours, caring about where we live, and helping those that need us aren’t bad places to start.

Over 110,000 people across the country are coming along to host and attend get togethers of all kinds; from street parties, to concerts, BBQs and bake sales. All with the idea of bringing people together and it’s all happening this weekend.

The Great Get Together was started by the friends and family of Jo Cox, and lots of exciting charities and organisations have been involved in making it all happen - including 38 Degrees. [3] This is a chance to take part in something positive and uniting where you live.

Imagine the power when hundreds of thousands of people come together in their communities on the same weekend. It will send a message to those who’d like to divide us: they will never win.
