Devon tree champion plans for more woods

By Exeter Express and Echo  |  Posted: January 13, 2014
Devon County Council has backed calls from a newly-tree champion to roll out a new planting programme on its land.
Independent county councillor Claire Wright, who is also the Woodland Trust’s county champion, said the UK was “lagging a long way behind Europe” on protecting trees and planting new ones.
Council leader John Hart has this week supported the motion and asked his cabinet colleague for the environment, Roger Croad, to implement new measures.
Councillor Wright said there was “less than 10% tree cover in England compared to 44% in Europe”.
She added: “Thanks to looser planning rules and the desire for economic growth at all costs, our woods have never been more under threat. It is excellent news that the cabinet is supporting the motion I submitted in December. I now need to liaise with the Woodland Trust on how we can work together.”
