Exciting news - Fairtrade Fortnight begins on Monday!

We have our new Sidmouth Fair Trade Group banner at the Library.

A quick reminder of what is happening locally.

Monday 25th FEBRUARY - Sunday 10th March 

Displays during all of Fairtrade Fortnight in SIDMOUTH LIBRARY - also raffle with Fairtrade gifts from local businesses.

FRIDAY  1st March 2:30 presentation and a chance to meet  Veronica Browne a Fairtrade Banana Grower from St Vincent in the Windward Islands.

Fairtrade Refreshments, Stalls, (including craft, food, and Waitrose Foundation) information and Fairtrade tombola.

In the morning Veronica  will visit Sidmouth College and be part of a workshop on Fairtrade and Bananas.

SATURDAY 2nd March 10:30 am   Coffee Morning and storyteller Tony Sparkes at Sidmouth Library samples and information about Fairtrade and the raffle continues.

SUNDAY 3rd March 9:30 - 12 pm  FAIRTRADE  & LOCAL BREAKFAST and coffee  at the Methodist Hall with Fairtrade craft and food stalls 

There is a service in the church at 10:30 am - come  if you wish - people will remain in the   Hall for conversations , selling from the  stalls and serving coffee.

SUNDAY 3rd March  Fairtrade Refreshments cake & coffee at the parish church of St Giles & St Nicholas after 10am Eucharist..

SUNDAY 3rd March 3pm - 4:30 pm Community FAIR & LOCAL Cream tea at St Francis Church Hall Woolbrook with stalls,  raffle  and  cake  followed by Evening service at 5pm if you wish. There is a large free car park and it is near bus stops.

Fairtrade stalls and information available at all of the above events and at the Tourist  information office and Sidmouth Herald and on our Facebook page via Sidmouth Council.

We do hope you  will be able to come to at least one of these events.

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 2019 

is Monday February 25th – Sunday March 10th 

We are excited that Veronica Browne and Simeon Greene, Fairtrade banana growers from St Vincent, Windward Islands, in the Caribbean are visiting Devon for Fairtrade Fortnight. This is a wonderful opportunity to find out first hand, how much difference just choosing Fairtrade products makes to people’s lives.  The Banana Growers will be in Devon from St. Vincent for all of Fairtrade Fortnight.

Sidmouth Library will have a display for the whole of Fairtrade fortnight.

Friday March 1st Banana Grower visits Sidmouth

The morning will be spent at at Sidmouth College with Year 7 pupils.

Afternoon: there will be an Open meeting at St Teresa’s Hall - with a presentation about Fairtrade and Bananas with Fairtrade Refreshments and Sale of Traidcraft Crafts, food, as well as a display by Waitrose of their range of Fairtrade goods.

Saturday March 2nd 10:30 The Library: storytelling and activities in children’s library

Coffee morning 10:30-12 noon

Sunday March 3rd

Everyone is welcome to the Community Fairtrade and Local Breakfast at the Methodist Hall from 9:30 – 12: 15 with Traidcraft craft and food stalls

Fairtrade Refreshments after 10am Service at the Parish church – and March 10th

Fairtrade Refreshments at St Teresa’s Hall after morning mass

Everyone is welcome to the Community Fairtrade and Local Afternoon Teas with Fairtrade stalls at St Francis 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Fairtrade Fortnight in Sidmouth > local breakfast and local afternoon tea > Sunday 4th March

We are now halfway through the Fairtrade Fortnight:

This is from the latest press release, giving a little more info:

Sidmouth has been a Fairtrade Town for just over a year (in  August  2016 we received our certificate) although Devon has been a Fairtrade County for over 10 years.

It is the second year that Growers have visited Sidmouth College - last year Isaac , a Cocoa farmer from Ghana  and this year Victor and Esther Tea growers  from Kenya and Sidmouth Primary School held a Fairtrade poster competition as well as an Assembly  about Fairtrade.

The Churches  and Sidmouth Library have been involved with Fairtrade for many years and ‘Sidmouth Fair Trade Group’  was formed in 2014  to try to expand community involvement.

We were delighted when the Town Council repainted the ‘Welcome to Sidmouth ‘ boards and added that we are ‘A Fairtrade Town’

We have a place on the town website and a Facebook page.

We also have a Banner up on the sea front during Fairtrade Fortnight.

And here's some info about tomorrow's big events:

Our next events include a Community 'Fairtrade and Local Breakfast' on Sunday March 4th  
from 9am at the Methodist Hall to which everyone is welcome. 
It will include Fairtrade cereals, bananas , orange  juice, tea, coffee, marmalade, jam, honey with local bread rolls, milk, butter, apple juice. 
Free entry (donations gladly received with profit to Traidcraft) everyone is very welcome. There will also be a Fairtrade craft stall.

Also Sunday March 4th 'Fairtrade and Local Afternoon Tea' 3pm  
at St Francis Hall Woolbrook. 
Delicious local scones, cream, Fairtrade jam and Tea.
Everyone welcome - also with a Fairtrade Stall 

Saturday March 10th at Sidmouth Library 10:30  Coffee Morning 
and award of Prizes for our Fairtrade Treasure  Hunt

Some fun and games coming up at the end of the month - and some good food and drink too:

Join the Fairtrade Fortnight "Treasure Hunt”!

With Fairtrade Fortnight (26 February - 11 March) fast approaching, local campaigners are gearing up for a host of events in Sidmouth.

This year’s Fortnight kicks off with a special “Treasure Hunt”: prizes will be awarded to those who manage to track down the most "Fairtrade supporter” stickers, which can be found in windows, on doors and inside shops, cafes, churches and other buildings around the town.

Sidmouth Fairtrade Group Coordinator Wendy Spratling says:

“We think the competition will prove a fun way to showcase the many places where Fairtrade goods can be purchased locally. We are delighted to see local businesses and organisations getting on board, and hope that more will follow suit as demand for ethically traded products grows."

Fairtrade “detectives" of all ages are invited to take part in the competition. Entry forms are available from the Library and Co-op store from Monday 12 February, and should be returned to the Library by Saturday 3 March. The prize-giving will take place at a Fairtrade Coffee Morning at the Library on Saturday, 10 March.

Other highlights of Fairtrade Fortnight include a "Meet the Tea Grower” event at All Saints Church Hall at 2 pm on Thursday 1 March, a Fairtrade Breakfast at the Methodist Church on Sunday 4 March, and a Fairtrade Afternoon Tea at St Francis Church on the same day. Admission to all events is free, and everyone is welcome.

Tea pickers of the Sireet OEP co-operative in Nandi Hills Kenya, who supply tea to the Co-op stores.

Chocolate lovers are being invited to a special tasting session next week to celebrate Sidmouth’s ongoing support of Fairtrade products.

The town has successfully renewed its Fairtrade town status and on Tuesday, November 14, the Sidmouth Fairtrade Group and Kennaway House will be offering Divine chocolate to showcase how Fairtrade supports workers and farmers in developing countries.

The Divine company is co-owned by the Ghanaian farmers’ cooperative Kuapa Kokoo, which supplies the cocoa for each bar. As owners, the farmers get a share in the profits, a say in the company, and a voice in the global marketplace.

Wendy Spratling, co-ordinator of Sidmouth Fair Trade group, said; “We all like a little chocolate now and again, and we hope that this event will encourage more people to make an ethical choice.

“By choosing Divine chocolate as opposed to non-Fairtrade brands, we can support Kuapa Kokoo’s efforts to empower farmers, increase women’s participation in its activities and develop environmentally friendly cultivation of cocoa.”

The event will run from 10am to 12.30pm at Kennaway House and admission is free.

Residents are being invited to find out about life as a cacao farmer as part of Sidmouth’s annual Fairtrade fortnight.

Isaac Biadoo and Veronica Mintah have been invited to speak at Waitrose about their work producing beans in Ghana to make Divine chocolate.

Devon Fairtrade has arranged for the farmers to give talks around the county. Sidmouth was last year awarded Fairtrade Town status.

Waitrose customers are encouraged to come and speak to the farmers to see how Fairtrade works for them on Thursday, March 9, from noon.

They will also give a talk at Kennaway House at 2.30pm.

The visit is part of the fortnight, which runs from on Monday, February 27, until Sunday, March 12, with activities organised around the town to raise awareness.

Wendy Spratling, of Sidmouth Fairtrade Steering Group, said: “We want to make it into a big event. We want it to be more visible - it’s something that a lot people can do at home or when they are at work. It’s all part of the big project that more people are doing this and are more aware.”

Other events organised as part of Fairtrade Fortnight include a breakfast at the Methodist Church hall on March 5 and a tea part at St Francis Church Hall in the afternoon.

Primary School Fair Trade Poster Competition

Design a poster to illustrate the benefits of fair trade! Entries should be A4 size and can be a drawing, painting, computer generated design or collage. They should be submitted to the library by noon on Saturday 25 February (with name, age and tel./email/address on the back). 

The winners will be judged by the library staff, and the results will be announced and prizes presented at the library on Saturday 4 March at 10.30 am. All welcome – Fairtrade refreshments will be available. Some of the posters will be displayed in the library during Fairtrade Fortnight.

Sunday 5 March

9.15 am, Methodist Church Hall: Fairtrade Breakfast.

Thursday 9th March

Visit by Fairtrade farmers from Kuapa Kokoo, Ghana (suppliers of cocoa for Divine chocolate

- 12 midday, Waitrose store: Fairtrade chocolate tasting “Meet the Cocoa Farmer”

Fairtrade fashion on show at All Saints’ Church

THE Sidmouth Fairtrade Group held a fashion show and fayre over the weekend to show off their range of ethical clothing

The event, which was held at All Saints Church, attracted a big audience who watched the models strut their stuff in a range of ethically made and traded goods.

Local department store Fields showcased a selection of their clothes, while Exeter based Sancho’s Dress – who have supported Sidmouth’s desire to become a Fairtrade Town from the start – were also present.

Following the show, there was a fayre with plenty of stalls selling fairly traded products, as well as refreshments and a raffle.

Chris Hardy, who introduced the models, said: “I think you’ll agree that we have seen a fantastic range of gorgeous clothes and accessories which anyone would be proud to wear. Proud because they look gorgeous but more importantly because they have been ethically produced enabling people to become self sufficient using their skills to create a better world for themselves and the environment.

“Please support Fairtrade Fashion in any way you can – it is so important to make it the future of fashion for us all.”

We are celebrating with a “Just Fayre & Fashion Show” which takes place at All Saints Church on Saturday 8 October.
It takes place from 10.30 am – 3.30 pm, with the fashion show at 11.30 am (featuring clothes from Fields (Natural Nomads), Sancho’s Dress (Fairtrade shop from Exeter) and Flo & Us). 
We’ll also have a range of stalls with fairly traded products, a café and a smoothie bike. 
Admission is £1 including tea/coffee.

Effort of volunteers pays off. 

Sidmouth has been awarded Fairtrade status thanks to the efforts of local campaigners.

The announcement was made today following a resolution in 2016 to actively promote Fairtrade to consumers, businesses and community groups in the area.

As part of the campaign, retailers had to pledge to sell more than four Fairtrade products and eateries to serve Fairtrade tea and coffee. The campaign also secured support from local authorities, faith groups and voluntary organisations, as well as lobbying businesses to promote the Fairtrade message in their working practices.

Wendy Spratling, spokesperson for Sidmouth’s Fairtrade Steering Group, said: “This is excellent news and we would like to thank all members of the local community who have helped to make it happen. We hope that others will soon follow suit so that we can go on increasing the availability of Fairtrade products across the town.”

Adam Gardner, communities campaigns manager at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: “We are delighted to welcome Sidmouth to the Fairtrade movement, which now unites over 1,500 communities worldwide, taking practical steps to making a fairer world trade system a reality.

“Thanks to the support of the public and campaigners, an increasing number of farmers in developing countries are now selling their products on Fairtrade terms, bringing them a stable income, and the chance to trade their way out of poverty.”

Today, more than 1.4 million people – farmers and workers – across more than 70 developing countries benefit from the international Fairtrade system, but there is still a long way to go.

Fairtrade helps small-scale farmers ensure they earn stable incomes and have long-term contracts with companies. In addition, they earn the Fairtrade Premium, which they invest as the farmer-owned co-operative democratically chooses, in projects that will benefit their business or community.

Here in Sidmouth, the steering group is looking forward to celebrating the town’s new status at its ‘Just Fayre and Fashion Show’, which takes place at All Saints Church on Saturday, October 8, and will feature a range of fairly traded products along with a café, stalls and other attractions, including a smoothie bike.

LOCAL campaigners came together in Sidmouth last week to celebrate the completion of the application procedure to give the town Fairtrade Town status.

The celebration took place at The Filling Station in Cross street, which recently reopened as a fully Fairtrade takeaway and café.

Over the past few months, Sidmouth’s Fairtrade Steering Group has been busy working towards the five goals required in order to qualify as a Fairtrade Town. These include a resolution of support from Sidmouth Town Council, the availability of Fairtrade products at a minimum of four retailers and two catering outlets and their use by a substantial number of businesses and community organisations. The group is confident that these goals have now been achieved, and hopes that Sidmouth will soon be joining the growing number of Fairtrade towns up and down the country.

Coordinator Wendy Spratling said: “We have been much encouraged by the response to our campaign from many members of the community. Gaining Fairtrade Town status is just the start. We need the public to help us increase Fairtrade provision in the town by asking for Fairtrade products with the Fairtrade mark you can help ensure better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in poorer countries.”

The group’s next step will be to produce a local directory of Fairtrade products, and it is looking forward to holding a “Just Fayre and Fashion Show” on Saturday October 8th at All Saints Church, which will showcase Fairtrade and ethically produced goods and celebrate the progress made so far.

The campaign to make Sidmouth a Fairtrade Town hots up at the beginning of next month:

The event will include a short film presentation on the benefits of fairtrade to producers, along with refreshments,

information stalls, fairtrade products and music by harpist Cheryl Watson.

Vision Group for Sidmouth - Fairtrade Fortnight

The Town Council is very much behind the project:

Sharon Howe, Elizabeth Harris and Trish Sulaimani attended the meeting to give a presentation regarding Sidmouth becoming a Fair Trade Town. Fair Trade fortnight was to run from 29 February to 14 March 2016; Members were invited to attend the Sidmouth launch event which began at 10.30am on Tuesday 1 March at Sidholme Music Room. 

RESOLVED: that 
1. Sidmouth Town Council supports the Sidmouth Fair Trade steering group in its endeavor to register Sidmouth as a Fair Trade town. 
2. Sidmouth Town Council would directly support the Fairtrade scheme by offering Fairtrade tea and coffee in meetings and implementing Fairtrade principles in purchasing policies where possible. 
3. The Chairman of the Council would become the Town Council’s representative on the Sidmouth Fair Trade committee; although a deputy will attend the Sidmouth launch event as the Chairman will be away.
