Listing flint walling as local heritage assets

Two years ago, the Sid Vale Assn launched its project to update and formalise the 'local list' of heritage assets:

Things are slowly making progress at the District Council:
Futures Forum: Locally Listed Heritage Assets: report for East Devon

It is understood that, meanwhile, heritage officers at the District Council are working on a 'Built Environment Heritage Strategy' - which is set out in the Local Development Scheme that was considered at the Strategic Planning Committee in January.

This strategy will 'set out our broad approach to, and priorities for, built heritage Conservation' - and once this has been confirmed, then progress can be made on the Local Heritage List.

Here is the section from the committee meeting:

East Devon Local Development Scheme

Schedule for Supplementary Planning Document:

> East Devon Local Heritage List
This SPD will establish ground rules for determining how assets will be assessed in respect of their appropriateness for inclusion on the Local Heritage List.
The expectation is of consultation and adoption in 2017

> Built Environment Heritage Strategy
This strategy will set out our broad approach to, and priorities for, built heritage conservation.
Ongoing into 2017 with expected adoption in 2017 or 2018

And what are 'heritage assets' of local value?

Here are some magnificent examples of flint walling from the streets of Sidmouth:

Manor Road, where the wall predates the reconstructed (flint) Edwardian villa by at least a century:

The SVA's sister organisation is also active - and is hoping to have the Otter Valley's heritage assets, including its flint walls, afforded greater protection:
