LETS in Exmouth and Exeter

You might have heard of the LETS set up:

A local exchange trading system (also local employment and trading system or local energy transfer system; abbreviated LETS) is a locally initiated, democratically organised, not-for-profit community enterprise that provides a community information service and records transactions of members exchanging goods and services by using locally created currency.[1] LETS allow people to negotiate the value of their own hours or services.[2]

Research in the mid-nineties indicated that at least 40,000 people were involved in some 450 LETS schemes, most of them established according to the democratic and co-operative LETS model developed in Britain by LETSLINK UK, which began work in 1991. Our current contact list of over 300 indicates that their has been some shrinkage - if we say that membership averages 100 per scheme, this means about 30,000 or fewer members in the UK.

However, this has been accompanied by an increase in related initiatives, such as Timebanks, Freecycle, Commercial Barter, Fairtrade Campaigns, and Community Networks of all kinds, which attest to the continuing interest of people in making things happen in their community.

Things are happening in Exmouth tomorrow and next week:

Next Thursday 5th July – On 5th July Paul Strange, now released from his service to the media industry, will tell us about the re-launched Exmouth LETS. Come along at 19.30 (sharp or you'll miss it) for the talk at The Park Hotel, 114 Exeter Road, Exmouth, Devon EX8 1QH.
