Investing in renewables at Knowle?by sidmouthsid |
It's
been brought to SIN's attention that a local company have designed a solar
photovoltaic system for one of East Devon's historic estates. Could EDDC save
money by taking a (green) leaf out of Escot's book?
This
extract from the company's brochure gives details, and inspiration:
Solar PV at Escot House
Escot House has been the prestigious Devonshire home of the Kennaway family for over 200 years. The estate’s philosophy is to work in harmony with its surrounding natural environment and to promote sustainability to its many visitors each year. When the opportunity arose to install renewable energy SunGift Solar were called in to design a bespoke solar PV system.
“Maintaining and preserving our natural environment is extremely important to us,” said estate owner John-Michael Kennaway, “and lowering our reliance on fossil fuels is a key move in our journey towards a more sustainable estate. We have plans to generate a significant amount of our energy from renewable sources, so installing our first solar PV system was an important first step for us.”
After carrying out a full site survey at Escot House, we designed a a 3.92 kW roof-mounted solar PV system, before fitting it onto the aquarium. The panels not only power the headquarters of the Seahorse Trust’s building, which is based at Escot, but they also feed any surplus electricity produced back into the national grid.
The 3.92 kW array uses industry award-winning Siliken 245 panels, and looks set to pay for itself in just 7.7 years, creating a saving of 2.1 tonnes of CO2 per year.
“We’re looking for long term business solutions, not simply cheaper energy,” added Mr Kennaway “and SunGift Solar has provided this. They’ve done a marvellous job installing the PV system, and it’s reassuring to know that it is a sound business investment too.”
The Kennaway’s sustainable energy agenda has not stopped here, they are already looking into the possibility of installing a large biomass boiler, using sustainably-managed forestry on the estate to power it. By responsibly harnessing more of the natural resources they have around them, Mr Kennaway hopes to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, save their business valuable money, and protect against future increases in energy prices.
One of Escot’s missions is to educate its visitors on their natural environment and the family hopes to use their renewable energy experience in the same way. “We’re really looking at the bigger picture,” added Mr Kennaway. “We plan to educate our visitors on the advantages of renewable energy, not only because of the financial and energy-security benefits, but also because of its importance in harnessing the natural resources we have around us.”
