Celebrating trees with the Sidmouth Arboretum

Tuesday January 17th sees the Arboretum putting on its AGM
Sidmouth Arboretum

- with a talk by Pete Youngman of East Devon AONB on the Landscape to Legacy project:
East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - Legacy to Landscape; linking King Johns Oak to the future.

Meanwhile, here is the press release sent out after the Arboretum's annual event, as reported in the latest Herald:

CELEBRATION OF TREES
SIDMOUTH ARBORETUM report an excellent turn out on cold dry November last Friday night. Jeremy Woodward welcomed visitors to this open and free event with songs from Sid Vale Folk Choir.

Then followed a lively mix of speakers and stalls to visit in between short talks. John Wilding, forester and Manager of Clinton Devon woodlands, mentioned briefly the increase in pests and diseases of trees, but above all the threat of grey squirrels to growing commercial timber.

In the breaks, stall holders answered questions and exchanged information. The Sid Vale Association’s Richard Huntington, described the activities of their woodlands and estates section; while Kate Tobin outlined grants available from the Forestry Commission. Laura Goble, trainee countryside warden with EDDC, spoke of the role trees play in reducing flood risk.

Other members of the Arboretum group organised a tree quiz, won by John Twibell, and a raffle - with thanks to our many sponsors. This is planned to be an annual event, and next year perhaps with a microphone available – as the crowd were enjoying themselves noisily!
