Dozens of environmental protesters have gathered outside Devon County Council in Exeter as it holds a big budget meeting.
They want councillors to support a motion calling for the authority to follow Cornwall and Somerset councils to declare a "climate emergency", and commit to going carbon neutral by 2030.
We're already in a climate emergency. It's the duty of the councillors to acknowledge that and to accept that and to start to work on how we do something about that. They have the information, they have the research, they just have to decide how we're going to deal with this crisis now.

'Climate Emergency' declared - but shouts of 'shame on you' as target to be carbon neutral by 2030 rejected

Devon County Council has declared a ‘climate emergency’ but rejected calls to set a target becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Extinction Rebellion campaigners packed out the public gallery at County Hall and protested outside the council offices on Thursday prior to the meeting.

Shouts of ‘shame on you’ rang out from the public gallery when the ruling Conservative group voted against Cllr Jacqi Hodgson’s motion that would have set a carbon neutral by 2030 target.

Instead, the Conservative amendment to the motion that the council does declare a climate emergency and that they adopts a key recommendation of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – for Devon to become carbon neutral by 2050 at the latest – and that the Environmental Performance Board to review and recommend what further corporate approaches can be taken, was agreed.
