Another 20 buildings are set to be recognised for their heritage or architecture by Britain’s oldest civic society.

In 1991, the Sid Vale Association (SVA), backed by Sidmouth Town Council, placed 32 blue plaques around the town, mainly in the conservation area.
It now intends to replace a number of these that have been degraded by weather and celebrate another 20 premises – those that have an interesting history and/or an association with an historical celebrity, and/architectural merit.
A letter from Richard Thurlow, who chairs the SVA’s conservation and planning committee, to the town council says among the nominees is the authority’s HQ, Woolcombe House.
He says the project is in the preliminary stages and it will be necessary to discuss with the buildings’ respective owners if they agree in principle.
The SVA has previously published a guide to the existing blue plaques, entitled Life and Times in Sidmouth. It features the likes of Alma Bridge, the Byes Toll House, the Clock Tower and the Fortfield, with histories of each.
Town councillors will discuss Mr Thurlow’s letter when they meet on Monday (January 8).
