The Future for Health in Sidmouth: Sidmouth Victoria Hospital Comforts Fund

Gordon Vincent, chair of the Comforts Fund, addressed the Futures Forum meeting on health:

Graham Vincent [Chair of the Comforts Fund of the Sidmouth Victoria Hospital] outlined the five stages of work on upgrading the hospital since 1989, with the final Stage Five scheduled for completion in June 2014, entailing new physiotherapy facilities, single wards and a day-case surgery.

The Future: Graham Vincent felt that a well-educated public – whether with regard to diet, exercise or preventive medicine – would become more responsible for their own well-being.

The Comforts Fund has been central in raising funds for the cottage hospital:

Olympic hero Mary King shared stories of a career with horses spanning four decades in Sidmouth last week.
The 100-strong crowd turned out to hear of the celebrated equestrian’s successes, and her failures, while proceeds from tickets went to the Sidmouth Victoria Hospital Comforts Fund.
She spoke of her humble beginnings working in stables in Salcombe Regis to fund her hobby, through to her first Badminton horse trials and representing her country at six Olympic Games - much of which had been diligently followed by the audience.
Comforts fund president Sheelagh Michelmore said: “We are so delighted that the equestrian star from the valley could come to talk to us about her outstanding career.”
She added that phase five of the hospital renovations are proceeding well and thanked Mary King for helping them on their way to raising another £250,000 for the works.

However, 'cottage hospital' is perhaps a misnomer: the current Stage 5 of new investment will include new physiotherapy facilities, as outlined by Comforts Fund chair Graham Vincent - and it also offers surgery:
