Futures Forum: Climate Week in Sidmouth: presentation of the TourFish project report: 'Making Coastal Communities Resilient' >>> Wednesday 9th March
One of the main issues sill be 'making coastal communities resilient' - but what exactly does that mean? Here is an extract from a report going to the LGA's Coastal Issues group meeting this Friday - from Devon County Councillor Stuart Hughes, who is vice-chair of the group:

Sea Wall Collapse at Torcross and Slapton, South Devon
The longer terms ‘solution’, which is currently being explored, is the production of a Beach Management Plan; however, it remains to be seen whether the necessary funding can be justified for a scheme which offers protection to both the village and the highway asset beyond this. Whilst this approach can only hope to delay the inevitable consequences of climate change and rising sea levels in a vulnerable location, there is escalating political pressure, driven by the affected communities, to maintain the status quo. In reality, it is natural forces which will dictate the ultimate outcome here, rather than coastal management / defence policies and funding mechanisms.

Whilst this is of course a comment on this particular community, the reality is that 'making coastal communities resilient' will be a real challenge in the face of 'climate change and rising sea levels'
Nevertheless, the purpose of the LGA Coastal Issues group is to pool resources and know-how:

Welcome to the LGA Coastal SIG. The LGA Coastal SIG seeks to champion and represent the collective interests of coastal, estuarine and maritime communities by increasing awareness and debate on environmental, economic and social issues at all levels in relation to the coast. It works in partnership with other organisations with complimentary aims and brings pressure on the Government to secure local government’s full involvement at all levels of policy formulation concerning the coast.
