We should learn to love an equally important pollinator - and controller of pests:
Learn to love the hornet
They are a vital part of our environment, says Devon Wildlife Trust
Steve Hussey, from the Devon Wildlife Trust, says: "Hornets are very useful animals, anybody that has a garden can thank the hornet. What it does it eat and hoover up garden predators, they same things that are attacking your vestibules and flowers. They will also pollinate our flowers and plants. The are very useful things to have about us."
Devon Wildlife Trust believes that fears over the arrival of the Asian hornet is now leading to the misguided persecution of another separate species, the native European Hornet.
Asian hornets are devastating to honey bees, with the invasive insects raiding and destroying colonies. There is now growing fear among the UK’s beekeepers who are worried that the presence of Asian hornets threatens the future of the honey bee.
