There is a beach clean tomorrow, as part of Surfers Against Sewage's Autumn Beach & River Clean week, from 2.00-3.30. We will meet where Jurassic Paddlesports lives in the summer, near the bus stop opposite Bedford Car Park and along a bit. Bring a drink and snack for after for a plastic-free treat. All equipment is provided but of course bring your own if you have it. (Poster attached.)
There is a new blog post up on our website about a recent meeting I was invited to attend, at the council offices in Exeter, to get groups like ours to meet up and share ideas, with the aim of becoming Plastic Free Devon. See sidmouthplasticwarriors.org/monday-3rd-september-plastic-free-devon-meeting/
We will soon be organising a third steering group meeting, one of the aims of which will be to try to get a unified collection scheme going in the town for cigarette butts, which were extremely prevalent on the beach, prom and town this year. Probably because of the lack of rain in the first half of the summer, it became incredibly obvious just how bad the problem has become, and how it is seen as acceptable to drop cigarette ends on the floor (when they are in fact made from plastic). Our idea is to organise ourselves and then raise funding for cigarette butt bins for all bus stops and as many benches as we can, with someone in charge of emptying just one of them each with a rota established for collecting them all together, storing them (venue to be established as I really don't want these in my garage), to then send them off to Terracycle for their recycling scheme. This will need a properly engineered bid, properly worked out logistics and more of a team effort than anything else we have undertaken. Watch this space. Find out more about the Terracycle programme here.
We look forward to seeing you tomorrow - and remember, if you can't make that it's fine of course but if you are interested in just keeping a little area of Sidmouth clean perhaps you could sign up for Adopt A Spot! If we can get the whole of Sidmouth covered by Adopt A Spotters it will keep the town lovely and clean with very little effort!
Thanks
Denise
