Broken-down household appliances, wobbly furniture, tatty clothes and malfunctioning gadgets no longer have to be sent on a one-way trip to the tip.

A new Repair Café is opening in Sidmouth with a team of ‘fixers’, who have the skills and know-how to mend almost anything the public bring in.

The first one takes place at the Youth Centre in Manstone Lane tomorrow (Saturday), and from then they will be held on the last Saturday of every month.

The team behind it have been recruiting people with skills in sewing, darning, carpentry, electronics and mechanics, who can carry out the repairs and also pass on their know-how to visitors.

Angie Carney, the group’s lead, has been really pleased with the enthusiastic response so far. “It’s great to see the community getting behind it!” she added.

Entry is free but donations are welcome, and refreshments will be available.

PRESS RELEASE

Monday 24th September 2018

SIDMOUTH’S FIRST REPAIR CAFÉ

Are you about to throw out that useless old toaster or food mixer? Can’t you get that leg to stick on a favourite chair? Have you got too many holes in a much-loved shirt or skirt to keep it? Is your doll missing an arm or a toy robot malfunctioning and don’t know what to do?

Help is at hand. This Saturday sees Sidmouth host its first ‘Repair Café’ – and you can take almost anything to be looked at.

The Repair Café’s Dave Rafferty has already built up a team of ‘fixers’ who have the skills and know-how to help mend pieces that members of the public can bring along.

“Repair Cafés are free meeting places and they’re all about repairing things,” says Dave.  “Visitors bring their broken items from home and together with the specialists they start making their repairs in the Repair Café.”

And Angie Carney, the group’s lead, has been really pleased with the enthusiastic response so far. “It's great to see the community getting behind it!” she says.

The first Repair Café will take place between 10am and 2pm on Saturday 29th September at the Youth Centre, Manstone Lane.

Entry is free and there is no formal charge, but donations are welcome.

Refreshments will be served.
